A gentleman came into the bakery bearing an essay titled “The Bakery”. He said his father had recently passed away, and he had come across the paper while going through his father’s belongings. Here is the essay:
“If you go west on Broad Street in our town, after you cross Main Street and just before you come to Jordan, you’ll find The Bracken Mountain Bakery – nobody calls it that – it’s just The Bakery. It’s worth a stop.
Drop in around ten o’clock for coffee and you’ll be tempted by croissants, plain or almond; delectable Danish in a wide variety (the cheese is my favorite) but the actual pastry in all of them is unbelievably good. Or a scone might be to your liking – dried cherry, raspberry, blueberry, banana, even chocolate! Then there is an apricot brioche that almost floats off the plate. Of course a crusty roll and butter, if you are feeling a little austere.
Stop by a little later and cookies begin to appear – oatmeal raisin, snickerdoodle, ginger molasses, and chocolate chunk And then come the flatbreads: olive, herb, striata and – as unlikely a combination as you’ll ever find – blue cheese, onions and pecans! Wonderful.
Of course there is bread in abundance. Everything from a baguette to a German seeded rye to a sunflower oat. And it is all baked fresh everyday – nothing is carried over.
